Other Sources of Help or Advice

Health care and advice can be obtained from a number of other places in addition to the medical centre:

NHS Direct

NHS Direct is a free, confidential 24-hour telephone advice and information service. You can call NHS Direct on 0845 4647 any time if you or a family member feels ill. You can also visit NHS Direct Online at www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk. NHS Direct can also provide advice on local health services, self-help or support organisations.

NHS Walk-in Centre

The NHS Walk-in Centre is located at the Sheffield City GP Health Centre on Broad Lane, Sheffield, S1 3BP and is open every day from 8.00am to 10.00pm. No appointment is needed, and patients can be seen and advised by a nurse for minor illnesses, confidential advice, emergency contraception, etc. Telephone Sheffield (0114) 241 2700

Minor Injuries Unit

This unit is located at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, and offers advice and treatment for minor injuries such as small cuts, grazes, sprains, etc.

Accident and Emergency Department

Located at the Northern General Hospital, this unit deals with more serious injuries and illnesses. If a fracture is suspected, or a deep cut which may need suturing, the A&E department offers the best way to assess and treat the injury.

Community Pharmacist Advice

Pharmacists are qualified to give advice on common complaints, and can answer questions about medicines, and staying healthy. If you visit your local community pharmacy (chemist), they can advise you whether or not your symptoms suggest that a visit to see us at the surgery is necessary. There is a local project for people who have a current exemption from prescription charges and who are suffering from minor ailments – ask the receptionist for a leaflet explaining the scheme where you can obtain some medicines free of charge direct from the chemist.

And finally, you can often Look After Yourself!

Many minor illnesses, such as colds, headaches and sore throats, can be easily treated at home using medicines available over the counter from a local pharmacy. If in doubt, ask the pharmacist, or ask to speak to the practice nurse or doctor, who will be able to advise you.
